Grid Modeling Researcher (Remote)

Location: Remote (100%)

Duration: 1-year contract

Pay Range: $80-85/hr.

About The Job:

As a Grid Modeling Researcher, you will be a part of the Research & Technology organization that works with our rapidly growing US and Global Business teams to help address their current technical needs and test new technologies for the future.

This role is a unique opportunity to contribute to the energy strategy of our company. In collaboration with other researchers on the team and external researchers at national labs and universities, the results from this person’s work will be an important part of the growth within the company and the company’s global goal of 100GW of renewables by 2030.

Description:

The ideal Grid Researcher will see the power grid as an essential highway that drives our current and future energy needs. You’re familiar with the way the grid is evolving from the addition of renewable generation and electric vehicles to the impact of changing weather patterns. You believe in the power of data to lead to new and exciting discoveries, and you want the opportunity for those discoveries to impact a global business.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Power Systems, or related field of study
  • 3+ years of experience in a field related to electricity power markets (design, analysis, optimization, etc.)
  • Experience with data science and quantitative analysis. Knowledgeable of PLEXOS, Aurora, or UPlan.
  • Data Analysis Platforms: Python and MS Excel
  • MUST have experience with large regional grids (microgrids do not translate into broader market-driven grids). Of the large regional grids, experience with ERCOT or PJM would be greatly preferred.
  • Fluent in English

Responsibilities:

  • Be a subject matter expert in the major US electricity markets for internal partners and stakeholders.
  • Develop experimental plans and perform methodical testing for new modeling approaches and inputs (e.g. nodal to zonal simplification, demand side modeling, etc.).
  • Adjust energy system modeling to consider the impact of regulatory and market design evolution.
  • Industrial and scientifical scouting on electricity market system modeling and optimization.
  • Identification and collaboration with industry-leading research partners, both internally and externally.
  • Coordinate plans with internal R&D teams with similar goals.
  • Ensure proper follow-up with key stakeholders for project costs, milestones, and relevance of results.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in transmission and distribution power systems, grid innovation, and/or demand side forecasting
  • Experience in translating macro trends in grid development (renewable generation, flexible demand side resources, electrification, etc.) into a quantitative impact (congestion, load curve, nodal pricing, etc.)
  • Familiarity with grid modeling software – PLEXOS (by Energy Exemplar) is preferred; however, experience with Aurora (or UPlan) could also translate over to PLEXOS.
  • Interest in on-going research and policy topics related to the US electrical grid
  • Proficiency in French
